Things to Do

Picturesque and pristine lakes and other bodies of water lavishly adorn the Winthrop Lakes Region. They provide for a multitude of recreational activities—bird watching, boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, and more—as well as moments of deep relaxation and tranquility.
Island-studded Lake Cobbosseecontee is truly the crowning gem of the region. Surrounded by the towns of Manchester, Monmouth, and Winthrop, Cobbosseecontee covers a 5,543-acre area and is approximately 9 miles long. An annual “Concert on the Lake” is held in July at Horseshoe Island Cove. The name Cobbosseecontee, attributed to the Abenaki Indians, means “the place of many sturgeon.”
The Winthrop Lakes Region offers some of the finest smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing in Maine. Cobbosseecontee, in particular, is considered one of the best lakes in the northeast—many of the state’s largest bass have come out of it. In addition to the lakes, all of the major rivers and many of the smaller ones have bass fisheries. Bass tournaments take place on many weekends on a number of the lakes.  In addition, brook, brown, and lake trout as well as perch and pickerel are to be found in the region.
The other large lakes in the region are Androscoggin (3,826 acres) (south of Wayne and west of Winthrop); Annabessacook (1,420 acres) (east of Monmouth and south of Winthrop); and Maranacook ( 1,673-acres) (south of Readfield and north of Winthrop). The annual Fourth of July Fireworks in Winthrop are displayed with Maranacook as a backdrop. There are public beaches in Readfield (pass/permit required) and Winthrop.
