AND THE ART SHOW GOES ON!

In spite of heavy rains on Saturday, August 21, many undaunted
artists and their customers braved the deluge at the 17th
annual Winthrop Sidewalk Art Show. Artists tucked themselves
into doorways and covered their displays in sheets of plastic
to keep their artwork and their customers dry.
The majority of the more than 80 Maine artists, who were
scheduled to display and sell their artwork, chose to set up
in the morning despite the rain and remained that way
throughout the day. According to Robin Struck, who
co-coordinated the event with Pat Ladd, the event still drew
several thousand people, and many of the artists reported
strong sales. Though the usual throngs were not out in the
streets, wet customers were packed in Apple Valley Books and
the Masonic Building, where the Friends of Bailey Public
Library held their annual book sale. Many other businesses
were filled to capacity as well. And, the Winthrop
Congregational Church sold out of its ever-popular lobster and
chicken-salad rolls.
Artists participating in the show were able to submit one
piece to be judged for prizes totaling $4,500. The best of
show prize was awarded to Marie Claude Ferland, and honorable
mentions were awarded to Denis Leblanc, Michael Dyer, and Ed
Murdock. In the oil painting category, first prize went to
Marilyn Dwelley, second prize went to Sandra Leinonnen-Dunn,
and third prize went to William King. In the watercolor
category, first prize went to Irene Roth, second prize went to
Jim Rogers, and third prize went to Diane Hooper. In the mixed
media category, which includes photography, sculpture, pastels
and pen and ink, first prize was awarded to Craig Wrathen,
second prize was awarded to Steven Dunn, and third prize was
awarded to Cindy McIntyre.
The event was sponsored by the Winthrop Area Chamber of
Commerce and local businesses. The Winthrop Area Chamber of
Commerce coordinates and sponsors such community activities
and events as the upcoming 20th Annual Holiday Parade. The
Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce also hosts monthly meetings
and business after-hours events to foster information-sharing
and networking opportunities and to showcase area businesses.
